The temple is composed by five caves, converted in reliquary. The caves, built under a rock high 150 meters during the reign of Anuradhapura (first century B.C. – 993 p.C.n) and of Polonnaruwa (1073 – 1250) are by far the most imposing of Sri Lanka. The access is found along the slight slope of Dambulla rock, and offers a panoramic view if the surrounding planes, including the stone fort of Sigiriya which is 19 km of distance.
